Design Your Own Planeswalker

Do you follow Gregory Marques’s article series “Designer Fun” on ChannelFireball? If not, then you are missing out. As former employee of Wizards R&D, Marques gives rare insight into the design process of Magic cards. Go read his article “How to design Planeswalkers.” Then come back here and post your own proposal for a planeswalker.

We have come up with designs of our own further down below. Rise from the ashes, Phenice Firemane! Can you top it?

    +1 Creatures you control gain vigilance and haste until end of turn.
    -2 Put 3 2/2 white and red Soldier tokens with haste onto the battlefield. Sacrifice them at the end of the turn.
    -8 Search your library for up to 3 creature cards, put them into play tapped and attacking, then shuffle your library. Activate this ability only before combat.

  2. Saalas Nemoth, the Mnemophage

    +1: Target opponent exiles a card at random from his or her hand, you gain life equal to half the converted mana cost of that card, rounded down.
    -2: Target payer discards three cards from the top of their library, then exile those cards
    -6: You gain an emblem which says “You may play all cards from all exile zones without paying their cost. Opponents cannot play any cards that share a name with any exiled cards”

  3. Geralf, Stitcher of Nephalia

    +1: Exile target creature card from a graveyard, then put a 2/2 Zombie creature token onto the battlefield
    -1: Each player puts the top 5 cards of their library into their graveyard
    -6: You get an emblem with: “Whenever a creature enters the graveyard from anywhere, exile it and put a 2/2 Zombie creature token onto the battlefield for each creature exiled this way.”

    Flavor: Creepy, derranged necromancer with a dark sense of humor.

    -2: Copy target instant or sorcery spell you control. You may choose new targets for the copy
    -5: You get an emblem with “Each instant and sorcery spell you control has replicate. Its replicate cost is equal to its converted mana cost.”

    Pinkie Pie, Pastrymancer

    When Pinkie Pie, Pastry mancer has 3 or fewer loyalty counters on her, transform her.
    +1: Put a cupcake counter on target creature you control. It gains “Tap this creature and remove a cupcake counter from it: This creature deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
    0: Put a 1/1 pony creature token onto the battlefield
    -3: Put X 1/1 pony creature tokens onto the battlefield, where X is the number of ponies you control.

    +1 Put a cupcake counter on target creature. It gains “Tap this creature and remove a cupcake counter from it: This creature deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
    -1: Destroy target creature with a cupcake counter on it.
    -8: Gain control of all creatures, then put a cupcake counter on each of them. They gain “Tap this creature and remove a cupcake counter from it: Destroy target creature.
    Flavor: My Little Pony inspired planeswalker who can go a little… crazy. If you’re a fan of the show and you’ve ever read “Cupcakes” You know what I’ talking about.

    +1: Exile two target permanents.
    -1: Put any number of exiled permanents onto the battlefield under your control.
    -X: Search your library for a creature with X mana cost.
    -9: Transform Urza
    Urza, Speaker for the Soul
    Loyalty: 3
    +3: Put two soul counters on target permanent. As long as there is a soul counter on it, it is indestructible.
    -X: Take X soul counters of target permanent. That Permanent gains lifelink and deals X damage to target creature or player.
    -20: Put eight +1/+1 counters and one soul counter on every creature you control. They gain double strike and trample.

    +1 All human werewolves flip and gain haste until end of turn.

    -2 prevent all damage dealt by anything except for werewolves and wolves.

    -4 all werewolves get +X/+X, Where x is amount of damage being dealt.

  8. Kresh, Battle-scourge of Jund RRGGBB

    Loyalty: 4

    +3: Kresh deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
    0: Kresh deals 1 damage to each creature and gains 1 loyalty counter for each creature put into a graveyard this turn.
    -3: Exile target creature. Put a 3/3 Red Human Warrior Rogue token onto the battlefield with “Whenever a creature dies, this creature gets +X/+X, where X is that creature’s toughness.
    -14: Kresh deals 10 damage to each creature target player controls. Each creature killed by this ability deals damage equal to half of its toughness to Kresh. For each creature killed by this ability, Kresh gains 3 loyalty counters.

    +1 Sacrifice a creature. Then your opponent loses X life, where X is the creatures Power
    -3 Destroy target creature, or Planeswalker
    -8 You get an emblem with ” Whenever your opponent loses life, return target creature from your graveyard to the battlefield. Creatures returned this way have haste. Sacrifice this creature at the beginning of your end step

  10. Meet the planeswalker that I think best represents my spirit of exploration and discovery:

    Rioji the Wanderer

    +1 Exile target land. If Rioji the Wanderer leaves the battlefield, return that land to play under it’s owner’s control.

    -2 Search target’s player library for a card and exile it, then that player shuffles his/her library. If Rioji the Wanderer leaves the battlefield, shuffle that card into it’s owner’s library.

    -12 Exile all nonland permanents except Rioji the Wanderer. For the rest of the game, cards exiled by Rioji the Wanderer do not return to their owners, and you may cast all cards exiled by Rioji the Wanderer by paying their converted mana costs.

    +1 all spirits get hexproof, vigilance, and first strike until end of turn
    -1destroy target creature, put a token that is a copy of that creature on your field. Creature is a blue spirit in addition to all other colors ans types.

    -8 destroy all non spirit creatures. Gain life equal to creatures destroyed in this way
    Start with 4 counters. Costs 2blue 1white 2 any other

    -8 destroy all non spirit cre atures

    +1- Put 2 1/1 Goblins onto the battlefield
    -3- For every Goblin on the battlefield, make a copy of that Goblin and put it onto the battlefield
    -7- You get an emblem with “Whenever a Goblin you control attacks, all Goblins you control gain +1/0 and intimidate until end of turn. Untap them”

  13. Boulder, the Unmovable 20 colorless to cast

    +5 Put a 0/5 indestructible colorless rock onto the battlefield with haste and defender.

    -3 Put a 5/5 indestructible colorless boulder onto the battlefield with haste and fading 2.

    -21 Boulder, the Unmovable becomes a */* indestructible colorless creature permanently. His power and toughness are equal to the number of Magic: the Gathering cards are in the room at any given time. He has infinite haste. (a creature with infinite haste attacks every time something happens in the battle. for instance, if a land was tapped. or if a spell was cast. every time something like this happens Boulder, the Unmovable attacks and blockers must be declared immediately.

    -7 You gain an emblem with “whener you enter combat, all creatures you control gain two of the following abilities, first strike,lifelink,vigilance,and intimidate until end of turn

    Kane is a prince whos mouth and cockyness has almost been his undoing many times, but over the years he tired of living in peace and set out to explore the world. His powers of magic grew every day until he ignited his planeswalker spark. He hides away in the lands of Tarkir, training until he can find a way to truely harness his power.
